What is the difference between primary and secondary numbing?

Primary numbing is applied to intact skin before the procedure (usually a cream) to desensitize the area. Secondary numbing is applied during the procedure once the skin is broken (usually a gel), where it absorbs quickly to maintain comfort and can help reduce bleeding.

Do I need both a cream and a gel?

Most artists use both: the cream makes the first pass comfortable, and the gel keeps the client numb through the rest of the session. Together they cover the full appointment.
