The 1003RL is a three-needle round liner on a 0.30 mm nano taper — the cartridge most artists reach for when a hairstroke has to still look like a hairstroke after it heals. Three needles set in a tight round cluster deposit one clean line with enough pigment to survive the first shed, without the spread you get the moment you pick up a shader.

Why three needles and not one

A single-needle liner (1RL) draws the thinnest possible stroke, but it carries very little pigment, so most artists end up running a second or third pass — and every extra pass is more trauma and more blur once the skin settles.

Three needles change that maths. The cluster holds enough pigment to lay a complete stroke in one pass while staying narrow enough to read as a hair rather than a mark. That is why the 3RL is the workhorse of machine hairstroke work, and why it is usually the first cartridge an artist replaces when they run out.

Move to a round shader only when you want the edges to dissolve. A shader is built to spread; a liner is built to hold a boundary. Using a liner for shading fights the tool, and using a shader for hairstrokes gives you strokes that heal soft and wide.

Where the 1003RL sits in the liner family

All Elite liners share the same body and membrane; what changes is the needle count and the gauge.

• 1RL (0601RL, 0501RL, 1201RL) — single needle. The finest possible line, for the softest, most delicate hairstrokes and for detail on healed work.
• 3RL (1003RL, 0603RL, 0403RL) — three needles. The everyday hairstroke and lining cartridge. The 1003RL is the heaviest of the three at 0.30 mm, so it lays the most pigment per pass.
• 5RL and 9RL (1005RL, 1009RL) — five and nine needles. Faster coverage over larger areas; too wide for individual hairstrokes.

A finer gauge in the same 3RL configuration — the 0603RL at 0.20 mm or the 0403RL at 0.16 mm — gives a lighter, softer stroke on thin or mature skin. The 1003RL is the choice when the skin is resilient, the brow needs presence, or the pigment has to hold in an area that tends to fade.

Working with it

The 1003RL rewards a shallow angle and a firm stretch. Held upright it punches; held at roughly 45 degrees it draws. Anchor the skin in three directions before every stroke — a liner skips on loose skin and the stroke heals as a dashed line rather than a continuous hair.

Wipe along the direction of the stroke, never across it. Wiping across a fresh hairstroke lifts pigment straight back out of the channel you just made.

Hygiene and disposal

Every cartridge is a single-use, individually sealed unit with a filtered back-flow membrane that keeps pigment and fluid out of the machine grip. Check the seal before you open it; if the blister is compromised, discard it. Dispose of used cartridges in a sharps container in line with your state's requirements — in California that means an approved sharps waste container, never household waste.
