PMU Machine Voltage & Speed Settings by Technique

Running a PMU machine at the wrong voltage is one of the most common reasons a technique underperforms — too low and pigment doesn't deposit consistently, too high and you risk overworking the skin. Here's how voltage and speed generally map to technique.

Quick answer: As a general reference: 5–6V for nano hair strokes, eyeliner, and sensitive skin; 6–7V for powder brows and lip blush; 7–8V+ for dark lip neutralization, resistant skin, or SMP. Always start conservative and adjust based on how the skin actually responds, not a fixed number.

Why these are starting points, not fixed rules

Voltage recommendations vary by machine brand, needle configuration, and individual skin — the numbers above are a reference range, not a setting to dial in blindly. Skin thickness, client age, and even the specific cartridge you're using (see our needle configuration guide) all shift where in the range you should land. Run a test stroke at the low end of the range and adjust up only if pigment isn't depositing evenly.

Speed matters as much as voltage

Speed (needle cycles per minute) and voltage work together — higher speed at the same voltage generally means a smoother, more controlled stroke for fine work like hair strokes, while lower speed with slightly higher voltage suits denser shading. Most professional PMU machines let you adjust both independently, which is worth using rather than relying on voltage alone.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if the voltage is too low?

Pigment deposits inconsistently, strokes can look patchy, and you may end up going over the same area multiple times, which increases trauma to the skin without improving the result.

What happens if the voltage is too high?

Overworking the skin, excessive trauma, poor healing, and pigment blowout (migration under the skin) become more likely. Higher isn't better — it needs to match the technique and skin.

Should voltage change between clients?

Yes — skin thickness, age, and sensitivity vary by client, so the same technique can call for a different setting within the typical range from one client to the next.

Does needle configuration affect the right voltage?
