What SMP is and why the machine matters

Scalp micropigmentation creates the visual impression of a close-cropped haircut on a bald or thinning scalp by layering thousands of tiny pigment dots at consistent depth. Unlike powder brows or lip blush, SMP asks for an extremely short needle stroke — just deep enough to seat the dot without blowout. The 3.5 mm stroke on the Elite Precision Pen is tuned for this: long enough to reach the upper dermis cleanly, short enough that it does not over-penetrate on the thin scalp skin above the temporal bone.

Working with it

SMP is a dot technique, not a stroke technique. Use a single-needle or 3RL cartridge, keep the machine at a shallow angle (closer to perpendicular than lining angle), and work in systematic passes across the scalp rather than filling randomly. Let each session heal before assessing density — fresh pigment reads darker and more saturated than the healed result. Most SMP plans require two to three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, with a final density pass if needed. Scalp skin is thin and moves differently from face skin; practise your dot consistency on silicone before your first client.
